From the Pacific NW to the Eternal City, United fans are everywhere

Black-and-Red supporters are known around Major League Soccer for their unwavering loyalty, but it seems that the fans' dedication is not limited to the Western Hemisphere. The photo above was taken by our very own Tony Limarzi, who was recently in Italy to celebrate his sister's wedding. The shot is of Tony's son Luca proudly holding up his colors in front of the Roman Colosseum.

Sitting on Ben Olsen's desk in the coaches office in RFK Stadium is a signed MLS Jabulani ball. United's Interim Head Coach received this gift following Sunday's 2-0 home victory over Philadelphia Union. All of Olsen's players signed the ball to commemorate the former midfielder's first career win in charge of the Black-and-Red.

Nine players visited United to experience soccer in the U.S.

Last week, nine young Panamanian soccer players were given the opportunity to experience their favorite sport in the United States. Since their arrival on August 13, the players practiced and completed a series of intense technical sessions throughout the city, including sessions with D.C. United’s Soccer Camps. In addition to carrying out strenuous amounts of practice, the four boys and five girls were also able to enjoy the many wonders of Washington. They visited the different museums, the IMAX theatre, attended both D.C.

Supporters Charity Shield set for Saturday, August 21

Barra Brava and Screaming Eagles face off in second annual charity match

Tickets for the charity event cost $10 and are available both at the gate and online.

The much-anticipated return of the Supporters’ Charity Shield match between Barra Brava FC and Screaming Eagles FC will be held this Saturday, August 21 on the RFK Auxiliary Field. The second annual event will feature a double-header, starting at 12:00 p.m. when the clubs' women's sides take the field. The men's teams will face off in the second game with kickoff slated for 2:00 p.m.

For the many die hard fans of the beautiful game, EA Sports' FIFA series is a staple of daily life. The 2010 version of the famous video game is perhaps the best installment of the franchise, and all of us take pride in our ability to play the game. The players of D.C. United are no different. Members of the Black-and-Red recently played off against one another for the right to take on our fans in the 2010 D.C. United Xbox Challenge presented by Ledo Pizza.

Ava may only be 8 days old, but she supports the Black-and-Red

D.C. United is renowned for having the most loyal supporters in Major League Soccer, and from the look of things our fans are starting earlier every year. Ava Carlsson had this photo taken when she was only eight days old, and it is fairly clear where her soccer allegiance lies. The shot was taken by Lisa Julia Photography, and we thank Ava's father John for sending over the photo. John has been a season ticket holder for five years, and he never misses a match - a trait that he aims to pass onto his daughter.

D.C. United along with the Maryland SoccerPlex welcomes the 2010 MLS ¡Futbolito! 4v4 Tournament on Saturday, August 7. Players of all ages are invited to compete in one of three divisions for the chance to win $3,000 in cash prizes, tournament medals, and prize packs. In addition, each participant will receive a free ticket to D.C. United’s August 14 match against FC Dallas at RFK Stadium. The event is presented by local sponsors: Verizon Wireless, State Farm, Pollo Campero, and Volkswagen.

Earlier this week, I wrote about how increased contributions from Santino Quaranta are needed in order for the team to salvage something from this season. I wasn't singling him out for negative reasons, but he has the potential to provide a lift for this club that few others possess. On the heels of a hat-trick against Portsmouth F.C., we should also focus on another important attacking piece, Danny Allsopp.
